New Screen Blanking application developed by JLT Mobile Computers, in collaboration with Linnaeus University, reduces driver distraction and supports compliance with global safety rules.

Växjö, Sweden — August 2025 — JLT Mobile Computers, in collaboration with Linnaeus University, has introduced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution designed to enhance safety in industrial environments. The innovation, called Screen Blanking, automatically blanks the display of vehicle-mounted computers when a vehicle is in motion, restoring it once the vehicle stops.
The solution addresses emerging global safety regulations and directly targets one of the most common hazards in warehouses and logistics hubs: driver distraction.
Vehicle-mounted computers are indispensable in logistics, manufacturing, and industrial operations. Yet their active displays can divert attention when vehicles such as forklifts are moving. In some regions, regulators already require mounted screens to go dark during vehicle operation, and further mandates are expected.
“This isn’t just about compliance,” said Per Holmberg, CEO at JLT Mobile Computers. “By integrating AI into our rugged computing solutions, we’re helping customers protect their most valuable asset—their people—while keeping operations efficient.”
How the Screen Blanking Technology Works
The Screen Blanking system is powered by AI and Machine Learning (ML) models optimized to detect vehicle motion with high accuracy while using minimal computing resources. Unlike other safety add-ons, it does not require costly additional hardware.
Data collection began with JLT’s own JLT6012 rugged computers, which include built-in motion sensors. To simulate real-world conditions, the team developed a novel test rig—a modified shopping cart—that generated movement data for analysis. Researchers at Linnaeus University then built an AI model fine-tuned for efficiency, allowing the device to run reliably in busy industrial settings without taxing CPU performance.
“For us as a leading academic institution with deep theoretical knowledge in computer science and mathematics, it’s incredibly valuable to see our research applied to real-world problems,” said Björn Lindenberg, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Linnaeus University. “This collaboration with JLT demonstrates how AI and high-performance computing can transform industrial safety.”
The project highlights the growing value of partnerships between universities and industry players. JLT brought its operational experience in rugged hardware and logistics, while Linnaeus University contributed advanced research in AI and high-performance computing. Together, they created a system that not only satisfies regulatory requirements but also offers immediate practical benefits for industrial operators.
“This project showcases how collaboration between academia and industry can lead to practical innovations that directly improve workplace safety,” Holmberg said.
After passing extensive internal validation, the Screen Blanking application is now entering pilot trials with customers. Forklifts in live warehouse operations will serve as the first real-world proving ground. These pilots are expected to demonstrate how the technology performs under the pressures of daily use, while ensuring it achieves both safety and compliance goals.
By removing unnecessary visual distractions, JLT and Linnaeus University aim to reduce accident risks, strengthen occupational safety, and help operators remain focused while on the move.
