New pedestrian awareness camera and optional truck deceleration strengthens Yale Reliant suite.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – With pedestrian injuries continuing to pose a serious threat in material handling operations, Yale Lift Truck Technologies has announced a new pedestrian awareness camera system designed to improve visibility and operator response. The smart camera system, part of the Yale Reliant™ portfolio of operator assist technologies, detects pedestrians behind the truck and automatically alerts the operator with visual and audible warnings.
“Operator awareness is a foundational element of lift truck and pedestrian safety,” said Brad Long, Global Activation Manager at Yale Lift Truck Technologies. “We’re continuing to target the challenges of real-world warehouse environments with research and development, and the pedestrian awareness camera solution offers the capability and configurability that real-world warehouse environments need.”
A Smarter Approach to Forklift-Pedestrian Interaction
Mounted to the rear of the truck (forks-trailing side), the new camera uses a 110-degree field of view to detect pedestrians within a range of up to 16 feet. When a person is spotted, the system triggers alerts to the operator, helping prompt quicker decisions to reduce the risk of collisions.
Depending on the configuration, alerts can include voice prompts and visual light indicators showing the zone where the pedestrian is located. Operations can also opt for traction alerts, which gently decelerate the lift truck automatically to capture the operator’s attention.
The system is optimized for speeds of 5 mph or less, where most close-quarters warehouse travel occurs. Once the pedestrian moves out of view, the alerts automatically stop.

Pedestrian Awareness Camera Boosts Safety in a High-Risk Environment
Forklift-pedestrian collisions remain a persistent issue across warehousing and logistics. According to OSHA, there are over 34,000 serious injuries involving forklifts annually in the United States alone, with pedestrian incidents ranking among the most severe. Facilities often struggle with transient workforces and inexperienced drivers, compounding the safety risks.
Solutions like the pedestrian awareness camera respond to these concerns by using real-time inputs to help operators avoid accidents before they occur. The camera complements Yale Reliant’s broader technology ecosystem, which includes environmental sensing, dynamic stability support, and operator assist features. Since its 2021 launch, Yale Reliant has logged over 24 million hours of runtime on more than 8,300 units in the field.
