Hyundai WIA has developed a fully autonomous forklift designed to perform one of the more difficult tasks in warehouse automation: loading and unloading trucks without an onboard operator.

The South Korean industrial equipment and automotive components manufacturer said the forklift can independently navigate a factory, locate palletized loads and transport them through the facility before loading or unloading them at a truck. The first commercial deployment is planned for Kia’s Autoland Hwaseong manufacturing complex, where the system is scheduled to enter operation in May 2027.
The development is noteworthy because autonomous forklifts have typically gained their strongest foothold in structured, repeatable applications such as moving pallets between fixed production, storage and conveyor locations. Truck loading introduces additional variables, including trailer position, pallet orientation and changing dock conditions.
According to the company announcement reported by Financial News, Hyundai WIA’s system is designed to handle those tasks without direct human control.
Successful automation at the dock could extend the business case for autonomous forklifts considerably. Trailer loading and unloading remain labor-intensive and can create bottlenecks between highly automated warehouse interiors and comparatively manual shipping and receiving operations.
That gap has become a major focus for forklift and robotics developers. Jungheinrich, for example, announced earlier this year that it had invested in Navflex, a specialist developing Physical AI software for autonomous truck loading and unloading. Jungheinrich said field testing was underway with major customers in Europe and North America.
Hyundai WIA’s entry provides further evidence that dock automation is emerging as the next competitive frontier for autonomous lift trucks.
The significance is less about removing an operator from a single forklift than about connecting automated production and warehouse processes with the truck at the shipping dock. If suppliers can make that transition reliable under real-world conditions, autonomous forklift applications could extend into one of the last major areas of manual pallet movement inside the facility.
